Curriculum Development and Assessment

Aim of Module

This module focuses on two key aspects of learning and teaching. The curriculum is defined here as all the organised activities that take place within a formal learning environment. One significant element of these organised activities in that of assessment and this is also one of the key functions of a teacher. The module presents an expanded view of curriculum as formed from a number of influences and accountable to a number of stakeholders. Curriculum planning knowledge is essential for instructional designers, and for all those involved in the delivery, administration and assessment of learning. The assessment element of this module is practically based and interactive, aimed at providing the basic knowledge and competencies to enable teachers to become effective assessors of student learning.

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, you will be able to:

• Demonstrate a critical understanding of the history and development of curricular design theories and traditions in Further and Higher Education.
• Critically evaluate how curriculum issues and curriculum projects affect the learning experience of students.
• Apply the key principles of instructional design to a chosen curriculum project.
• Critically review the formative and assessment modes used in their own course(s).
• Articulate the nature and purpose of assessment in the post-compulsory environment at the level of the individual student and at systems level.
• Design, implement and evaluate an appropriate assessment scheme for a specific subject area.
